Asian-American YouTube and music industry figures talk about pandemic-related hate crimes against AAPI people and echoes of their parents and grandparents being sent to U.S. internment camps during World War II. How do we heal as a nation?
Germanna’s first Community Conversation discussion of the 2021 fall semester examines violence against the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities at 6 p.m. on Aug.31. The discussion will be centered around bringing awareness through sharing personal stories and observations by the panelists, ultimately pointing to solutions for forgiveness, reconciliation, and unity. Kat McDowell
Born in Tokyo and raised in New Zealand, Kat McDowell makes music with an Ocean Pop sound delivered in a blend of Japanese and English.
Her career started with a record that no 1. on the vinyl charts in Japan and her music has been placed in multiple commercials including a 2019 Xfinity and Apple commercial. Her single “Outside Inside” with Eden Kai was selected for multiple “New Music Friday” Spotify Editorial playlists around the world in 2020 and most recently in 2021, Kat’s newest single “Kokoro no Kakera (Kintsugi)” won Grand Prize in the World Section of the John Lennon Songwriting Competition.
Kat released her song “1000 Paper Cranes” as a tribute to her Japanese grandmother just as the pandemic hit and it sparked the idea to start zoom origami workshops for her supporters as a way to connect and bring some comfort and therapy.
Bonnie Nakasuji
Bonnie Nakasuji is a third-generation Japanese-American whose parents and grandparents were evacuated to one of the many U.S. internment camps during World War II.
She an occupational therapist specializing in pediatrics; has a private practice called Therapy West, Inc and pLAy Studio with clinics in Los Angeles and Gardena, Calif. and is an adjunct associate professor for the occupational science and occupational therapy program at the University of Southern California.
David Choi
