PREPARE TO ADJUST HOLIDAY TRAVEL PLANS

We know you have holiday plans. Important ones. Ones involving family, friends, traditions, and pie. But for your safety, we are asking you to prepare today to adjust your holiday arrival and departure plans if needed, and to avoid travel during inclement weather.

Hazardous road conditions may develop later this week in the Fredericksburg area along the Interstate 95 corridor and in the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula.

Early Thursday morning, there is a potential for a wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain in Stafford and King George counties during the morning commute.

Then, heavy rain is forecast to fall throughout the day Thursday. On Friday afternoon, temperatures are expected to quickly fall below freezing and remain below freezing over the weekend through Monday, Dec. 26. Any remaining wet pavement or water ponded on roads from Thursday's rain may flash freeze when this temperature drop occurs, creating icy, slick patches.

High winds Friday may also bring a risk of downed trees and debris. High wind advisory postings are possible for major river bridges in the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula, and service on the Merry Point Ferry and Sunnybank Ferry may be suspended.

Travelers should check 511Virginia.org or use the 511Virginia mobile app to view road conditions along your entire route before starting a trip. And, follow updates from the National Weather Service Baltimore-Washington at www.weather.gov/lwx/ and National Weather Service Wakefield at www.weather.gov/akq/ for the latest forecast information.
