A Ruther Glen resident was arrested yesterday after throwing stones at cars and attempting to assault deputies with his cane.
On August 10th, at approximately 6:48 a.m. Deputy F.A. Martinez responded to multiple calls of an individual throwing rocks at oncoming traffic near the 2600 block of Richmond Highway. The suspect was described as a man wearing all black and holding a cane. When Deputy Martinez arrived, he observed a man matching the description with a six-foot-tall walking stick on the side of the road. Deputy Martinez exited his vehicle in an attempt to talk with the subject.
Deputy Martinez recognized the subject, Thomas Jines, 66, from numerous previous encounters. Deputy Martinez attempted to talk with Jines multiple times; however, Jines was uncooperative. Things escalated when Jines raised his stick towards Deputy Martinez.
Deputy Martinez attempted to deescalate the situation by asking Jines to put the stick down multiple times. Finally, Jines threw his stick down, but then advanced towards Deputy Martinez.
Deputy Martinez attempted to detain Jines for his safety, while Jines continued to resist the detention. Deputy Martinez and First Sergeant J.J. Kreider were able to work together and place Jines in handcuffs. Jines threatened to hurt both deputies while in custody.
Jines was charged with throwing objects at occupied vehicles as well as assault on law enforcement. He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
