Pump Etiquette 101-6 Tips to Being A Considerate Gasbuddy

3

With all the focus on gas prices, you’re probably not thinking much about being courteous at the pump. There are so many other things to worry about, right? Not so fast! Believe it or not, these pump etiquette “rules” are easy to implement and benefit everybody. They’ll get you pump-ready, safe, and fueling better at every visit.

1. PULL UP!

When you arrive at the station, it’s always a smart idea to pull up to the farthest pump in the bay if it’s free. This makes it easier for other drivers to pull in behind you and park at the pump without having to back up or circle around. That’s less chaos for everyone, especially at those stations with tight spaces.

2. TURN OFF YOUR ENGINE.

Not only is it the law but turning off your vehicle while pumping gas is an important safety precaution, as well. Remember, your car runs on a spark-ignited internal combustion engine. All it takes is one little spark from static electricity (like from your fingertips) to ignite the gasoline you’re pumping. It may be a small inconvenience to turn off the engine, especially in extreme hot or cold weather, but it’s safer for everyone if you do.

3. EXTINGUISH ALL SMOKING MATERIALS.

Similar to #2 on the list, smoking at the pump is not only dangerous and potentially deadly, but it’s against the law. And in most states, it carries steep fines and even jail time. Gas vapors in the air are highly flammable and one small ash from a cigarette can ignite them. For everyone’s safety, as well as your own, always heed the warning signs posted and extinguish cigarettes, lighters, and all other potential ignition sources before you fuel up. This applies to passengers staying inside the car while you’re pumping fuel.

4. STICK AROUND.

When pumping gas, don’t leave the pump unattended (to go inside the store, for example. or even wash your car windows). Pumps can malfunction at any time. Many stations have gone as far as to ditch their nozzle trigger locks to avoid spills and sprays. Pumping gas only takes a few minutes, and requires your full attention, so it’s not the time to try to multitask.

5. GOING INSIDE? MOVE YOUR VEHICLE.

If you’re done pumping gas but decide you want to grab a soda or slice of pizza inside, be courteous and move your car to one of the parking spaces near the store to free up the pump for other drivers.

6. GRAB THAT RECEIPT.

If the receipt prints at the pump, don’t leave it blowing in the breeze for the next person to deal with. Be courteous and take it or throw it away.
