City of Fredericksburg issued the following announcement on Jan. 27
Rehabilitation of the Virginia Railway Express’ (VRE) Fredericksburg station took a step forward on January 21, 2022 when the commuter rail service’s Operations Board approved a task order for construction management services. Construction on the $5 million project is expected to begin this summer, following the selection of a construction contractor.
“This project, which will lengthen the station’s platform, is designed to improve passenger safety and convenience,” said Councilor Matt Kelly, who represents the city on VRE’s Operations Board. “New stairs will allow passengers to move between the platform and parking lot without crossing Princess Anne Street at grade level. Other improvements include new signage, sidewalks, lighting and paint. It’s truly a transformational project.”
“The Fredericksburg rehabilitation project is one of more than a dozen station improvement projects included in VRE’s six-year $1.1 billion capital improvement program,” said Operations Board Chair Margaret Franklin. “VRE, in partnership with the Commonwealth of Virginia, has embarked on a decadelong process that will make our service one of the most safe, reliable and convenient in the nation.”
The 13th largest commuter rail service in the U.S., VRE is a transportation partnership of the Northern Virginia and the Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commissions. The 4.5 million rides the railroad provided annually prior to the pandemic removed some 100 million vehicle miles from Northern Virginia’s interstates. Learn more at www.vre.org.
