Caroline County issued the following announcement on Aug. 26
The Caroline County Board of Supervisors is seeking input from Caroline County County citizens regarding the renaming of U.S. Route 1. Following a special session of the Virginia General Assembly, Governor Ralph Northam signed legislation renaming Route 1 from Jefferson Davis Highway to Emancipation Highway. Localities have until January 1, 2022 to adopt a different name within their jurisdiction if they so choose. The Board asks that citizens choose one of the options listed below or write in their own suggestion.

Washington Highway
Historic U.S. Route 1
U.S. Route 1

The Board of Supervisors will make the final decision on the name change after taking input from Caroline County residents into consideration.
