Cost of education increases for all University of Mary Washington students in 2022-23 school year

For the 2022-23 school year, in-state tuition at the University of Mary Washington rose by 2.9%, as revealed in the latest report, according to the latest disclosure from the National Center for Education Statistics.

Virginia residents paid $14,234 to attend the public four-year university this year, an increase of $404 from the $13,830 tuition charged in the 2021-22 academic year.

Non-resident students were charged 118.9% more than in-state students during the 2022-23 school year, paying $31,154. This represented a 3% increase from $30,256 in the previous year.

Approximately 87% of the university’s undergraduate students are Virginia residents, while about 10% come from other states and 2% are international students.

Data indicates that 99% of full-time undergraduates who enrolled in 2022-23 received some form of financial aid. A total of 721 students were awarded grants or scholarships amounting to $6.4 million, and 245 students borrowed over $1.8 million in student loans.

Among all undergraduates, 2,471 students received grants or scholarships totaling $20.8 million, and 1,074 students took out $6.6 million in federal student loans.

Undergraduate education costs have seen a significant increase over the past few decades. Data shows a 169% rise in the average total cost, including tuition, fees, room, and board, between 1980 and 2020.

According to a 2023 College Board report, in-state students at public universities paid an average of $11,260, while out-of-state students paid $29,150 in the 2023-24 academic year.

Meanwhile, student loan debt has steadily increased over the last 30 years, reaching $1.75 trillion in 2024, averaging a total of $28,950 per borrower. Federal loans make up 92% of the debt, with over half of students at both public and private four-year colleges graduating with student loans.
