THESE BAD PUMP HABITS ARE PROBABLY COSTING YOU MONEY

Average gas prices in the U.S. reached a new record of over $5 per gallon last year, and it’s no wonder that drivers have become more price-conscious at the pump. According to GasBuddy’s annul Pump Habits study, 74% of Americans have become more price-conscious at the pump during the last year. However, most drivers are still making crucial mistakes, which can cost them hundreds of dollars per year.

The study identified the top money-wasting mistakes drivers are making at the pump:

  • 79% of drivers have purchased gas only to drive by a lower-priced station immediately after. Compared to last year, this is an increase of 4%. For 42%, this has happened to them within the last month. Using an app to pick a price ahead of time can save drivers money on gas every fill-up.
  • 52% of Americans said they are somewhat willing to drive to a gas station that is farther away for cheaper prices. Prices can vary as much as 20 to 50 cents per gallon over less than a mile, so drivers should always pick their price on the GasBuddy app instead of picking a station.
  • 64% of Americans have come close to or run completely out of gas. Waiting until the gas light turns on to fill up drastically limits options when it comes to filling up. Keep an eye on your gas gauge and when falling to ¼ tank or less, check gas prices around you via the GasBuddy app to avoid picking a station based on convenience and instead pick a station based on price.
“Often, filling your tank is an afterthought, which robs you of hundreds of dollars per year. Motorists should get in the habit of picking a price, not picking a station,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy. “A station around the corner could be as much as 30 cents per gallon cheaper or if you pick wrong, more expensive. Drivers can also save $50 to $100 per year by stacking loyalty memberships on top of a gas card like Pay with GasBuddy.”

To save more money on gas, drivers can also sign up for the free Pay with GasBuddy card. The card acts as a debit card linked to the driver’s bank account and can take up to 25¢ per gallon off every fuel purchase. Members can also earn free gas on online and in-store purchases through the GasBack marketplace. For more information, visit gasbuddy.com/pay.
